So you're at the grocery store and can't decide between white eggs and brown eggs. What's the difference, anyway? 10-year-old Josiah, who lives with his family on an egg farm in Jordan, Ontario, sums up the answer in one word: nothing.

That's right. The only difference between white and brown eggs is the colour of their shells, which is determined by the colour of the chickens laying the eggs. So white chickens lay white eggs and brown chicken lay brown eggs. But other than that, there's no difference.

So how does Josiah know so much about eggs? Well, in addition to living on an egg farm, Josiah and his siblings help out by collecting eggs and sweeping the barn floor.

By doing these things, Josiah and his siblings are continuing their family's story as 5th generation Ontario egg farmers.

"There's a sense of continuity there," says their father, Chris Mullet Koop. "And it makes me proud."

"I love walking the barn in the morning and seeing all those white, clean, power-packed eggs sitting waiting to be collected and packed," says Chris. "Its an amazing thing that a hen can lay an egg every day."

Although Chris left home to attend university in Winnipeg to study music, he soon realized that his heart was in Jordan, on his family's farm. Today, Chris feels lucky, with his wife and three kids, they can continue to tend to the land and live the rewarding life of an egg farming family.
